Project Overview

The Central Embarcadero Safety Project aims to revamp San Francisco's iconic waterfront to prioritize walking, biking, and safe public access. This comprehensive redesign will transform the area between Mission Street and Broadway, creating a more accessible and enjoyable experience for residents and visitors alike.

Key Improvements

  • Two-way protected bikeway along the waterfront
  • Widened pedestrian promenades
  • Improved crossings at key intersections
  • Better connections to transit
  • Enhanced public spaces with seating and greenery

Timeline

The project is currently in the design phase. Community feedback is being incorporated into the final design through 2025. Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2026 and is expected to be completed by 2028.

Why This Matters

The Embarcadero is one of San Francisco's most visited destinations, but its current design prioritizes vehicle traffic over people walking and biking. This project will reclaim space for active transportation and create a safer, more vibrant waterfront that better serves both locals and tourists.
