Project Overview

The Great Highway Future project is focused on determining the long-term vision for this iconic corridor along San Francisco's western edge. During the pandemic, the Great Highway was closed to vehicle traffic and transformed into a recreational space for walking, biking, and other activities. Now, the city is deciding how to balance its role as both a transportation corridor and a public space.

Key Considerations

  • Balancing recreational use with transportation needs
  • Addressing coastal erosion and sea level rise
  • Managing traffic impacts on surrounding neighborhoods
  • Creating safe connections to Golden Gate Park and Ocean Beach
  • Preserving access to local businesses and amenities

Timeline

The project is currently in the public comment phase. Community input is being collected through October 2025, with a final recommendation expected by early 2026. Implementation of the chosen approach will begin in phases starting in mid-2026.

Why This Matters

The Great Highway represents a unique opportunity to reimagine how public space can serve multiple needs in a coastal environment. The decisions made now will shape this corridor for decades to come, affecting not only transportation patterns but also recreation, climate resilience, and neighborhood quality of life.
