Project Overview

The Oak Street Quick Build project is a $1.3 million redesign aimed at calming traffic, protecting bike lanes, and improving crosswalks along this vital east-west corridor. Oak Street serves as a key connector for families, students, and commuters traveling between the Panhandle and Market Street.

Key Improvements

  • Protected bike lanes with concrete barriers
  • Improved pedestrian crossings with bulb-outs
  • Traffic calming measures to reduce speeding
  • Better signal timing for cyclists and pedestrians
  • Improved loading zones for businesses

Timeline

The project is currently in the planning phase. Public feedback is being collected through June 2025, with design finalization expected by September 2025. Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2026.

Why This Matters

Oak Street has been identified as a high-injury corridor in San Francisco's Vision Zero network. Between 2018 and 2023, there were 47 reported crashes involving cyclists or pedestrians, including 3 severe injuries. This project aims to significantly reduce these incidents while making the street more accessible for all users.
