Protected bike lane with cyclists riding alongside outdoor dining on a San Francisco street

Protected bike lanes create safe spaces for cyclists while supporting vibrant street life and local businesses

Project Overview

The SFMTA Biking and Rolling Plan is a comprehensive, long-term effort to connect the city's protected bike lanes and make streets safer for all modes of rolling mobility. This citywide plan was approved in March 2025 and will guide infrastructure investments over the next decade.

Key Components

  • Creation of a connected, protected bike network across the city
  • Standardized design for protected intersections
  • Improved infrastructure for scooters, skateboards, and other micro-mobility
  • Better integration with public transit
  • Expanded bike parking and micro-mobility hubs

Implementation Timeline

While the plan has been approved, implementation will occur in phases over the next 10 years. The first phase (2025-2027) focuses on connecting existing protected bike lanes and addressing high-injury corridors. Continued public support is crucial to ensure the plan is fully funded and implemented.

Why This Matters

San Francisco has made progress in creating safer streets, but the bike network remains fragmented, with protected lanes often ending abruptly. This plan provides a roadmap for creating a cohesive network that will make cycling and other forms of micro-mobility safer and more accessible for people of all ages and abilities.
