Project Overview

The Slow Streets Program Expansion builds on the success of San Francisco's pandemic-era Slow Streets initiative, which created car-light corridors that prioritize walking, biking, and neighborhood activities. This expansion aims to make more streets across the city into community spaces where people of all ages can safely travel and gather.

Key Components

  • Expansion of Slow Streets to more neighborhoods, especially in underserved areas
  • Permanent infrastructure improvements to existing Slow Streets
  • Traffic calming measures like speed humps and diverters
  • Clear signage and street markings
  • Community programming and activation opportunities

Timeline

The program expansion is currently in the design phase. Community outreach and planning will continue through 2025, with implementation of new Slow Streets beginning in 2026. Existing Slow Streets will receive permanent improvements on a rolling basis starting in late 2025.

Why This Matters

Slow Streets have transformed how many San Franciscans experience their neighborhoods, creating safe spaces for children to play, seniors to walk, and everyone to enjoy their community without the stress of fast-moving traffic. By expanding this program, more residents will have access to these benefits, creating a more livable, connected city for all.
