Project Overview

The Valencia Street Redesign is a comprehensive project aimed at transforming one of San Francisco's busiest commercial corridors into a safer, more accessible street for all users. The project focuses on creating protected bike infrastructure, improving pedestrian crossings, and addressing long-standing safety concerns along this vital Mission District thoroughfare.

Key Improvements

  • Protected bike lanes separated from vehicle traffic
  • Improved pedestrian crossings with shorter crossing distances
  • Dedicated loading zones to reduce double-parking
  • Traffic calming measures to reduce speeding
  • Enhanced public spaces and sidewalk amenities

Timeline

The project is currently in the planning phase. Community feedback is being collected through September 2025, with design finalization expected by the end of the year. Implementation is scheduled to begin in phases starting in early 2026.

Why This Matters

Valencia Street has been identified as a high-injury corridor with numerous conflicts between cyclists, pedestrians, and vehicles. The street serves as a major north-south route for cyclists but has become increasingly dangerous due to ride-share drop-offs, double-parking, and high traffic volumes. This redesign aims to create a safer, more organized street that better serves the neighborhood's residents, businesses, and visitors.
